Hardware Review - Council of Vapor - Wraith

This was kindly sent to me for the purpose of Review by Joleen Bassett  who is CoV Northern Ireland Sales.

This test is based on continued use of the squonker for 2 week.

I seem to be having a lot of firsts with CoV, my 1st dipper was a Royal Hunter, my 1st RDA review was a Royal Hunter X and now my 1st Squonker and mod review is the Royal Hunter Wraith.

Unboxing ------

WHAT’S IN THE BOX:

  • 1 x Council of Vapor Wraith Squonker RDA Atomizer
  • 1 x Council of Vapor Wraith 80W Squonker Mod
  • 2 x squonk bottles
  • 2 x spare deck screws
  • 4 x spare o’rings
  • 1 x blue screwdriver
  • Instruction manual - does not give max/min limitations of the mod

First thoughts

Now as I have had CoV before I know that build quality is normally very good and this is no exception.

The mod fits right into your hand and the rubberized coating provides a non slip surface, also there is a carbon effect.

I will look at the RDA later in the review.

The top of the mod has a flat part where the spring mounted 510 sits nicely centred, the sloped part is where the stainless steel fire button sit, perfectly positioned for thumb firing.

Both side are exactly the same shape with only a printed "Wraith" on one side to differentiate the sides.

Along the front/back (depends on how you look/hold it) is the long thin screen, which is clear to read and also the two movement buttons.

On the backside of the mod you will see a cutout for your squonk bottle. This is the part of the mod that you squeeze in order to get the juice up to your atomizer. I actually like the squonking that is  included although people have said they prefer a soft bottle. The bottle has a fitted needle tip that slots up into the juice delivery system in the mod and is held in place by the battery cover.
You do get 2 bottles in the pack, one black and one clear, both come with lids. This is very handy for carrying a spare bottle of juice or even for having a 2nd flavor.

On the bottom of the mod is the battery cover which is a slide and lock mechanism which feels very secure. On the inside is a gold plated negative plate with the positive up under the firing button.

One thing I noticed compared to other mods I have is that there is no external venting holes, but with a gap around the squonking hole (is that even a term) this would give enough air space to vent.

What you may have noticed is that I have not mentioned an external charge/update port on the mod, this is because there isn't one, so you will need an external charger or some way of charging your single 18650 battery.

The RDA

The supplied RDA looks really great on top of the wraith and it is a very simple yet effective design. It is a very low profile deck that suggest great flavor.

Starting with the deck it is stainless steel which is set up as a dual coil, twin post deck with a deep juice well for such a small RDA. The holes are not overly big so two fused claptons are a struggle to get in but can be done. I preferred to use two micro coils in my builds. (8 wraps at 2.5ml which gave 0.19 ohms). It does take you build a biggish coil as there is a fair gap between the posts, but you could always use spaced coils to bridge the gap.

Directly onto the deck is a goes the outer barrel which is finished in the rubberized material as the body of the mod, so those who like matchy matchy will not be disappointed. There are 8 external air vents set at angles the whole way round. At the top on one side (hard to spot) are the marking for the airflow control, an infinity symbol, 4 dots and 2 dots. (more on this later)

The top cap fits snug into the barrel and even when dry is easy to turn/remove from the barrel. This has 14 air holes machined into it and it is really stylish, these holes then match up to the 8 external holes. The air is controlled by turning the top cap around and pointing the little dot on it to one of the three marks on the barrel. When set at the infinity symbol the air flow is wide open giving a very airy vape with big clouds. Set at the 4 dots you can feel the restriction but still a very pleasant easy vape.  When it is set to the 2 dots you can really feel the restriction on the vape but you get more of the flavor of the juice.

Due to the placement of the air holes it means that when set on infinity mode the airflow is not just directed at he coils but all the way through the deck, not something that I have encountered with an RDA before but during use something I really liked.

The drip tip that sits on top is a proprietary one which has a lovely shape and feel to it. It also has a built-in spit guard which I feel is definitely required with RDA having such a low profile. Only once or twice did I get juice in my mouth, but that was probably more down to bad wicking by me rather than the fault of the RDA.

At this stage I have to say I really really like the look of the Wraith and not one that I have to grow to like.

In use

Filling the squonk bottle is a breeze, just unlatch the battery cover and slide the bottle out. The top cap of the bottle pops of easily and the opening is big enough to get the nib of nearly all juice bottles into. Now it says it is a 10ml bottle but I fill it just short of the top, maybe 8 mls, just to be on the safe side.

Slot in a battery and instantly the screen lights up, adjust your wattage via the + and - buttons and vape away. The bottle I find is just squishy enough to give you feedback to how hard you are pushing it in, so you don't over fill the RDA.

I have used both the RDA that came with the wraith and the wasp nano and can honesty say that they are both on a par for flavor and cloud production.

Using a single coil on the CoV RDA gives you a better battery life but don't expect to use this all day on one battery. (i am going through 3 batteries a day)

The menu structure does take a little to get used to, but after a couple days you should have the basics under control and easily changing the wattage.

THE MENU SYSTEM:

  • Click the fire button 5 times to turn the mod on and off
  • Click the fire button three times to lock or unlock the mod
  • Use the minus button to scroll through the preheat selections
  • Use the plus button to scroll through the memory slots
  • Click the fire button 5 times to enter the main menu mode once in the main menu mode use the plus and minus buttons to scroll through your selections

A nice touch I found was that as your battery power fades, the wraith will adjust the wattage automatically so if you have it set to vape at 74 watts and have less than a third of the battery life left it will drop the wattage for your vape as you press the fie button.

Overall I rate the Wraith very highly and I have hardly put it down since I got it, it really is my goto vape.

So the pros and cons in my opinion are:

Pros -

  • Complete squonking kit
  • Buld quality
  • CoV brand
  • Design of mod and RDA
  • 2 squonk bottles and caps
  • Great fire button
  • Good quality squonk bottles
  • Screen clarity
  • Great flaour from RDA
  • Deep juice well
  • Texture of finish

Cons

  • Battery life
  • No charge port
  • Firmware not up-gradable
  • Post holes are small - Although this stops you putting in large battery draining builds.

As you can see I have found more Pros than cons but as they are subjective you might find something I find as a Pro, a con and also the other way around.
